The verse on this Jugendstil (youth style = modern art) stein is from an old German folk song entitled "die Nachtwächterlied" (the night watchman's song), ca. early 1900's.
Hört Ihr Herren, lasst Euch sagan! Der Hammer am Turm hat Zwölf geschlagen.	Listen, Oh Lord, let me tell You! The hammer on the tower has struck twelve.
