The verse is translated literally, but means essentially that where there is no beer, no good Christian will stick around. The stein is marked with the logo of Merkelbach & Wick, ca. 1900.
Wo Hopfen und Malz verloren ist, da läßt sich nieder kein guter Christ.	Where hops and malt are lost, there sits down not a good Christian.
